NY Times highlights special risks nurses face in SARS crisis

May 8, 2003 -- Keith Bradsher's excellent piece in today's New York Times, "At Hong Kong Hospitals, SARS Takes a Heavy Toll on Nurses," describes the heroic nurses who care for SARS patients, including the hundreds of nurses in Asia and Canada who have been infected while doing so. Bradsher focuses on a young Hong Kong nurse whose life has been turned upside down by her SARS work, but who nevertheless continues to provide critical care to SARS patients. Bradsher emphasizes that nurses face far greater risks than other health care workers as the crisis moves past the initial stages because they work so much more closely with patients. This point has not often been made, especially in pieces that leave the impression that only physicians are involved in SARS care.
