Nurses in Motion: "Fighting De-Nursification"
July 18, 2007 --
Barbara Ficarra's Internet video program "Nurses in Motion" recently featured an extended interview with Center director Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH. Summers and Ficarra discussed the causes and effects of the poor public understanding of nursing, especially as seen in the mass media. Summers argued that nurses' inaccurate public image is a key factor in the critical nursing shortage, affecting the level of resources directed to nursing practice, education and research. She also addressed barriers nurses face in speaking up about their work and its value. watch the video...

Center for Nursing Advocacy Conflict of Interest Policy
The Center does not accept donations, honoraria, or anything else of value from any manufacturer of infant formula, tobacco products, or firearms. This policy applies to direct financial support, and to indirect support such as in-kind donations or sponsorship of events or functions. However, Center representatives may participate and speak at conferences and meetings in which such companies also participate, provided that (1) no such company is a sponsor or financial supporter of a specific event or function (such as a luncheon) at which the Center representative is speaking; (2) half of the sponsors or financial supporters of the overall conference or meeting are not companies engaged in the above activities; and (3) no materials produced by the organization(s) holding the conference or meeting can reasonably be read to suggest that the Center supports such companies or receives support from them. If there will be no conflict for us in this regard, we will be happy to speak at your gathering. Thank you.
FAQ: Why do we have this policy?
A: As an organization working to strengthen the nursing profession we believe that one tenet in that pursuit is to work in the best interests of our patients. The ultimate goal of our work is not a strong nursing profession in its own right. Our end goal is to strengthen health care delivery for the sake of our patients. We work to improve the system that provides them care. This begins with reducing the power of corporations that have the ultimate effect of decreasing their health. Nursing professionals must work on behalf of their patients at all costs and not be caught in circumstances where they are beholden to any company that sells products that work against our patients' health.
