Nancy Marie Valentine, RN, PhD, MSN, MPH

Nancy M. Valentine is Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer of Main Line Health, a five-hospital group member of the Jefferson Health System, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. and one of a few ANCC Magnet Health Systems in the U.S. In this role she brings strategic and operations management expertise to the development of an expanding system of healthcare serving two million people in southeast PA.

Dr. Valentine is also principle of Valentine Group Health, a company focused on business development for small innovative product, service and education companies that add value to nursing operations and patient care. She serves on boards that focus on strategic marketing and consumer-focused product development for businesses involved in health education and communications. She is also a founder of Patient Dialogue, a company that brings decision-making support to the challenges involved in chronic care and end of life management.

Prior to her current roles, Dr. Valentine served as CIGNA HealthCare's first Vice-President, National Nursing Executive, providing policy and nursing community strategy development to the company's nearly 3,000 nurses employed in a wide variety of managed care roles. From 1993-2001, she was appointed to the US Department of Veterans Affairs national role of Assistant Chief Medical Director for Nursing Programs (CNO), working with 65,000 nursing staff and later, Special Assistant to the Secretary for Health Affairs and Advisor to the Undersecretary for Health in Washington, D.C., working with VA Secretaries Jesse Brown and in the immediate office of Togo West, Jr.

Earlier leadership roles include VP for Nursing at McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA and Director of Nursing at Boston City Hospital, Boston, MA.

A former health policy fellow with the Department of Health and Human Services, she has earned degrees in nursing (BSN and MSN), public health (MPH) and economics and health policy (Ph.D.) from Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Wharton School of Finance, Harvard University and Brandeis University, Florence Heller School; respectively. Dr. Valentine was awarded an honorary doctorate in science from Regis College, Weston, MA in May, 2004. She has held advisory board, adjunct and visiting scholar faculty positions in 17 schools of nursing in every city in which she has been employed, including serving on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.  

She serves on both for-profit and not-for-profit advisory boards, and has been elected a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and the National Academy of Practice (FNAP). Dr. Valentine is the first nurse to be invited to join both the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and the Board of Trustees of Regis College in Weston, MA.   Dr. Valentine is past president and founding member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, has served on the founding board of the American Psychiatric Nurses foundation and is a past president of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research, a member of Sigma Theta Tau's Foundation serving as chair of the corporate giving committee. She is a former commissioner and executive board member and Treasurer on the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission, headquartered in NYC.
